Suspect in Times Square plot faces terror charges

NEW YORK – A Pakistani-born U.S. citizen was hauled off a plane about to fly to the Middle East and will face terrorism charges in the failed attempt to explode a bomb-laden SUV in the heart of Times Square, authorities said Tuesday. One official said he claimed to be acting alone.

Faisal Shahzad has admitted his role in the botched bombing attempt and is talking to investigators, providing them with valuable information,Attorney General Eric Holder said.

The investigation stretched to Pakistan, where intelligence officials said several people had been detained in connection with the Times Square case.

Shahzad was on board a Dubai-bound flight that was taxiing away from the gate at Kennedy Airport late Monday when the plane was turned around and federal authorities took him into custody, law enforcement officials said. Federal officials had placed him on a "no-fly" list hours before his arrest.

Shahzad, scheduled to appear later Tuesday in federal court inManhattan, will face terrorism and weapons of mass destructioncharges, Holder said.

"Based on what we know so far, it is clear that this was a terrorist plot aimed at murdering Americans in one of the busiest places in our country," he added.

The FBI read Shahzad his constitutional rights after he provided information, and he continued to cooperate, FBI Deputy Director John Pistole said.

President Barack Obama said the FBI was investigating possible ties between Shahzad and terrorist groups.

Obama said "hundreds of lives" may have been saved Saturday night by the quick action of ordinary citizens and law enforcement authorities who saw the smoking SUV parked in Times Square.

"As Americans and as a nation, we will not be terrorized. We will not cower in fear. We will not be intimidated," Obama said.

Shahzad, 30, had recently returned from a five-month trip to Pakistan, where he had a wife, according to law enforcement officials who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the investigation into the failed car bombing.

Attack on Prison Guard

(Oct 4) -- Hillsborough County, Florida, Deputy Kenneth Moon was alone at his station at a county jail facility near Tampa when an inmate attacked him with no warning.
Moon, 64, was no match for Douglas Burden, 24, in custody on various drug charges. With Moon still in his chair, Burden put him in a choke hold and pulled tight.

And then, surveillance video of the Monday attack showed, other inmates jumped into the fray.
But the other inmates joined the fight on the guard's side, pulling Burden away from Moon and punching him in the head. One inmate grabbed Moon's radio and called for back-up. The inmates held Burden down until other guards arrived as one of them extended a hand to help Moon up, according to the video.

The city of Chicago is still taken aback by the sheer brutality employed in the vicious beating of a local teenager.
16-year old Derrion Albert was murdered, the victim of a gang assault while leaving Fenger High School in Roseland, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago.
In a “free-for-all”-esque brawl that witnesses say lasted for less than five minutes, Albert become collateral damage in a fight that was originally meant to be between two warring cliques.
Dozens of students watched as the honor roll student was pummeled with fists after being blindsided by a crushing blow to the skull with a board.
“After he hit the concrete, a gang of them just came over and started stomping him in the head and started beating him,” said an anonymous eyewitness to the tragedy. “It was over for him.”
Security cameras, housed on building near the crime scene, caught the incident and were used to identify as many perpetrators as possible.
To date only three assailants have been caught in connection with the attack. All three have been charged with first-degree murder.

New design for Nets' Brooklyn arena unveiled

NEW YORK (AP) -- With just months to go until a critical financing deadline, the developer trying to move the New Jersey Nets to Brooklyn unveiled a revamped design for the team's new arena Wednesday.

The latest plans for the Barclays Center call for a domed, irregularly shaped arena with glass walls wrapped in two bands of brownish weathered steel.

In drawings and models, the woven steel bands give the building the appearance of being covered in wicker.

People arriving for basketball games or concerts will enter the building beneath a huge overhang that cantilevers over a public plaza. Some glimpses of the interior stadium bowl and the scoreboard will be visible from the street.

The design is the latest in a string from the development team, and the second since the project's original architect, Frank Gehry, was jettisoned because his $1 billion design was too expensive.
These latest plans are a collaboration between the architectural firms Ellerbe Becket, a veteran designer of sports stadiums, and SHoP, which was added to the project in June.
Developer Bruce Ratner said the two firms have been working with "Mercury-like speed" in advance of a crucial December deadline. The development, dubbed Atlantic Yards, needs to break ground by then or lose access to the tax-free bonds financing much of the project.
Ratner said Wednesday that the new designs are "iconic" and include "the best-designed interior layout of any sports facility."

Opponents of the arena project were unimpressed. The group Develop Don't Destroy Brooklyn called the designs "lipstick on a corrupt pig."
"The project is still a sham," the group said in a statement.

The arena is part of a broader redevelopment plan that is to eventually include 16 residential and officer towers with more than 6,400 apartments, built over property that now includes a rail yard, warehouses and several blocks of homes and businesses.
Critics of the project include homeowners whose property is being seized by the government to make way for construction and many other city residents who think the development will be too disruptive for the residential neighborhood.

It is unclear how much of that original plan will get built. Lawsuits have held up construction for years, and the plans for the office building and apartment towers are on hold.

Universal reveals details of new Harry Potter park

MIAMI — It sounds like a new book in the Harry Potter series, but "Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey" will be a high-tech ride and the marquee attraction at the "Wizarding World of Harry Potter," a new theme park area opening in spring 2010 at Universal Orlando Resort.

The "Forbidden Journey" ride was named by author J.K. Rowling and described Tuesday by Universal officials in a Web cast revealing details of what the Potter park will look like.

The ride will takes guests through scenes and rooms from the blockbuster movies inside a richly detailed remake of Hogwarts Castle made to look 700 feet tall. Hogwarts is where Harry attends a boarding school for witches and wizards.

Guests will enter the "Wizarding World" through a station archway named for Hogsmeade, the magical village near Hogwarts. A plume of steam and a train whistle will sound the arrival of the Hogwarts Express. The goal is to make the experience immersive, so nothing outside is visible after guests pass the Hogsmeade station archway.

"It couldn't have come at a better time," said Danielle Saba Courtenay, spokeswoman for the Orlando Convention and Visitors Bureau. "There is such an affinity for the characters, particularly in the United Kingdom, and we do expect that the pent-up demand and having such a strong name will drive traffic to the area.

"It's such a huge worldwide brand, and the only place in the world you're going to be able to experience it is in Orlando," she said.

Merriman says he didn't hurt 'Tequila'

The Labor Day weekend arrest of Chargers LB Shawne Merriman has seen comments from attorneys, police officials and even Chargers GM A.J. Smith, but none of the parties involved had commented — until now.

Merriman has sent a statement exclusively to FOXSports.com regarding the events surrounding the incident that led to a citizen's arrest filed by reality TV star Tila "Tequila" Nguyen against Merriman.

In his first comments regarding his arrest, Merriman says he did not assault the reality TV star and was trying to prevent Nguyen from leaving his home in an intoxicated state.

According to Merriman: "On September 6, 2009 the San Diego Sheriff's Department responded to a citizen's complaint that was initiated by Tila Nguyen (aka Tila Tequila). I was taken into custody based upon that complaint. At the time, I was concerned about her welfare given the intoxicated state she appeared to be in and I encouraged her to stay until safe transportation could be provided.

"We would all do our best to help a friend if we considered their actions to be detrimental to their personal safety. I in no way caused any harm to Ms. Nguyen, however, paramedics were called and she was examined but no injuries were reported. She was released and has since returned to Los Angeles, California.

"There have been no charges filed against me. I want to thank the San Diego Sheriff's Department for their professionalism. I will continue to cooperate fully with the Department, and I look forward to clearing my name regarding these false allegations. I want to put this behind me so I can continue to focus on a successful season for the San Diego Chargers."

Neither Nguyen nor her representatives wanted to comment publicly.

BREAKING NEWS: Jury Deadlocked In C-Murder's Murder Trial

A New Orleans jury was deadlocked as of 4:00 PM in regards to the second-degree murder trial of rapper Corey “C-Murder” Miller, in relation to January 12, 2002 death of 16-year-old Steve Thomas.

A jury of seven women and five men told Judge Hans Liljeberg they were deadlocked over Miller's guilt regarding the shooting death of the teenager during a dispute in Club Platinum, a defunct nightclub in Harvey.

Around 3:00 PM today, the jury told Judge Hans Liljeberg that they were deadlocked after deliberating for about three hours, in a case that only took a week to try.

Judge Liljeberg ordered them to continue deliberating stating that he had juries with lessor charges deliberate for over eight hours.

Prosecutors wrapped up their closing arguments to the jury around 10:00 am, while Miller’s attorney finished his around 10:40 AM.

The jury asked Judge Hans Liljeberg to clarify the definition of second-degree murder twice during their deliberations.

The trial comes seven years after Thomas’ death, who would have been 23-years-old this year.

Miller was convicted of second-degree murder in September of 2003, but the verdict was overturned in Louisiana Supreme Court, after it was revealed that prosecutors expunged several witnesses’ criminal backgrounds in hopes of boosting their credibility.

Under Louisiana law, Miller must serve a mandatory sentence of life in prison if he is found guilty.

Ex-Boxing Champ Vernon Forrest Shot Dead In ATL

Recent WBC junior middleweight champion and 1992 U.S. Olympian Vernon Forrest was shot and killed Saturday night during an attempted carjacking, WSB Radio in Atlanta has reported, citing a police spokesman.

Forrest, whose title was vacated in May amid an indefinite rib injury, was shot seven or eight times as he chased at least two men who had tried to steal his Jaguar as he put air in his tires at an Atlanta gas station, Lt. Keith Meadows said, according to the radio station.

“The victim and suspect became involved in a brief foot chase,” Lt. Meadows said. “At some point, gunfire was exchanged between the two of them. The victim was shot at least once in the head.”

“At this point we have a general description of at least two black males driving a red Monte Carlo,” Meadows said, according to the report.

7.1 earthquake topples homes, kills 2 in Honduras

TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras – A powerful earthquake toppled more than two dozen homes in Honduras and Belize early Thursday, killing two children and injuring 40 people as terrified residents spilled from their homes across much of Central America.

The magnitude-7.1 quake struck at 2:24 a.m. (4:24 a.m. EDT; 0824 GMT) off the Caribbean coast of Honduras, 80 miles (130 kilometers) northeast of the beach town of La Ceiba, according to the U.S. Geological Survey in Golden, Colorado.

"People were running for the door," Alfredo Cedeno said from the reception desk at the Gran Hotel Paris in La Ceiba. "You could really feel it and you could see it — the water came out of the pool."

Reynaldo Funez, 15, was buried in his house in Pineda de la Lima, 120 miles (200 kilometers) north of the capital, Tegucigalpa, and 6-year-old Deily Yazmin Santos was killed when her house collapsed in the beach town of Morazan, national fire commander Col. Carlos Cordero said.

He said there were unconfirmed reports of two more deaths. In all, he said, at least 40 people were injured, most along the Caribbean coast.

"It was an earthquake of great proportions," said Ana Maria Rivera, spokeswoman for the Honduran emergency commission.

Democracy Bridge, which spans the country's largest river, the Ulua, collapsed in the town of El Progreso, Cordero said. The bridge is one of two connecting the northern city of San Pedro Sula, Honduras' second-largest, with the rest of the country. Officials were evaluating the second bridge to make sure it was safe

C- Murder Will Be Sentenced To 10 Years In Prison

C-Murder, better known to the government as Corey Miller, has pleaded "no contest" to attempted murder charges. The No-Limit rapper and brother to Master P (known now as P Miller), plead to two counts of attempted second-degree murder and with the plea agreement he will be sentenced to 10 years in prison.

As we previously reported, the jury selection process for C-Murder's trial had just begun. More than fourty people were brought in as prospective jurors and Judge Tony Marabella asked whether anyone knew of the defendant, Corey Miller saying "Mr. Miller is a rap artist, or a hip-hop artist, if the terminology is correct," Marabella said. "He sometimes goes by C-Miller. He sometimes goes by C-Murder." In the crowded courtroom, 37 people raised their hands, setting in motion an extended jury-selection process that is scheduled to resume Wednesday.
